Saturday January 31-- This was our regular monthly meeting at Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center. From 9-10 am Gary Dunsworth led the members in tying the Palomino Midge, a detached bodied nymph, tied in a range of colors. The pattern is found on page 126 of the Fly-Tying Bible. The club meeting began at 10 am and and included a program by Bob Gillespie on winter fly fishing in Colorado.
Saturday February 28 -- Fly tying and our regular monthly meeting at Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center. From 9-10 am Gary Dunsworth will lead members in tying the Two-Feather Fly, a dry fly pattern created by Harry Darbee. The pattern can be found on Youtube at Savage Flies. The meeting will begin at 10 am. The program will be announced in the Club email to members a week prior to the meeting.
NOTE REGARDING CLUB FISHING OUTINGS: Beginning in late Spring and continuing through the Summer and early Fall the Club will schedule outings for the members. Historically the sites of these outings have included Crystal Cove in South Sioux City, NE; Verdigre Creek, a small Trout stream near Royal, NE.; Broken Kettle Grasslands located in Iowa just east of Highway 12 about 22 minutes north of Sioux City; and other ponds and lakes in the vicinity of Sioux City. Since weather and member availability to attend outings is variable, these outings will be announced on the Siouxland Fly Fishing Facebook page and in emails to the members.
NOTE REGARDING THE CLUB'S ONE-FLY CONTEST: Siouxland Fly Fishing conducts an annual One-Fly Contest for Club members. The contest targets Blue Gill during their spawn. Since the Blue Gill spawn is highly variable and unpredictable due to weather and water conditions, the Club will not set the time and date for the contest until conditions are favorable for the Blue Gill spawn. For more information on the One-Fly Contest, click on the "More" subheading on the main page, then click on "The Annual Corn Guppy One Fly Contest." Club members will be notified of the date and time for the contest by the Club's Facebook page and email.
Saturday March 28 -- Fly tying and our regular monthly meeting at Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center. From 9-10 am Gary Dunsworth will lead members in tying Stoat's, a hairwing style fly that can be tied on a single, double or treble hook. This pattern can be found at page 222 of The Fly-Tying Bible. The regular meeting will begin at 10 am. The program will be announced in the Club email to members a week prior to the meeting.
Saturday April 28 -- Fly tying and our regular monthly meeting at Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center. From 9-10 am. Gary Dunsworth will lead members in tying the Teeny Nymph, a fairly easy fly to tie, yet a very effective fly. This pattern can be found at page 98 of The Fly-Tying Bible. The regular meeting will begin at 10 am. The program will be announced in the Club email to members a week prior to the meeting.
Wednesday May 6 -- Our first Pond Night. The Club will fish the pond located just south of C-80 between County Road K-22 and US Highway 75. This is a private pond and the Club has permission to fish it. An Iowa fishing license is required. Members can expect to catch bluegill, bass and crappies. From 9-10 am Gary Dunsworth will lead members in tying the Viva, a streamer fly with a black body and lime green tail. The pattern can be found at page 184 of The Fly-Tying Bible. Wednesday June 3 -- Pond Night. The Club will fish the pond located just south of C-80 between County Road K-22 and US Highway 75. An Iowa fishing license is required. Gary Dunsworth will lead the members in tying the Wire Body Nymph found on Youtube at Savage Flies. Since there are several versions of this fly, at the meeting Gary will provide written instructions for the specific version that will be tied. The regular meeting will begin at 10 am. Wednesday September 2 -- Our last Pond Night of the year. The Club will fish the pond located just south of C-80 between County Road K-22 and US Highway 75. An Iowa fishing license is required. Saturday September 26 -- Fly tying and our regular monthly meeting at Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center. Fly tying from 9-10 am. Gary Dunsworth will lead members in tying the Missionary, the third streamer in this year's tying sessions. The Missionary is designed to represent a baitfish and is meant to be fished in lakes and ponds. The wing design causes the streamer to flutter as it descends and is often taken on the drop. You will find it at page 200 of the Fly-Tying Bible. The regular meeting will begin at 10 am. The program will be announced in the Club email to members a week prior to the meeting.
Saturday October 31 -- Fly tying and our regular monthly meeting at Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center. Fly tying from 9-10 am. Gary Dunsworth will lead us in tying the Hare's Ear Nymph, a classic all purpose that is effective in all water types and conditions. The pattern can be found at page 94 of the Fly-Tying Bible. The regular meeting will begin at 10 am. The program will be announced in the Club email to members a week prior to the meeting.
Saturday November 28 -- Regular monthly meeting at Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center. There will be no fly tying. The meeting will begin at 10 am. The program is Show and Tell (bring fly fishing equipment, materials and ideas for discussion).
Saturday December 5 --Our Holiday Party in lieu of regular monthly meeting, 10 am to noon. Coffee and treats will be provided by the Club.
